GREAT KILLS – "Ohana Means Family" was the theme at the second annual Great Kills High School (GKHS) Dance last Friday night in the PS 37 gym. The school, a District 75 special needs facility, teaches students vocational and life skills that prepare them for post-secondary placement.
Students joined together with their families for the dance, which was staged like a Hawaiian luau. As students entered, they were greeted with leis and grass skirts to complement the theme. Other features of the dance included a step-and-repeat for the students to pose in front of, a tattoo station and a cardboard cutout for fun pictures.
The GKHS Dance was sponsored by The North Shore Rotary Club, which expressed interest in the school thanks to the efforts of Jeanette Schulman, whose daughter attends GKHS. Other supporters helped make the dance a success with donations, among them Jimmy Max (one of the GKHS worksites), Partners in Sound, Pier 76, Costco and Cucina Mia.
School spirit was in full-swing as more than 30 dedicated staff members from PS 37 volunteered to celebrate the students and make the dance a success, a true testament to the word "ohana." The 40 students in attendance, many of them overcoming obstacles such as anxiety, physical disabilities, and emotional challenges, had a wonderful time.
